Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Beckenham

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If your home has a side each for a couple and room for a growing wardrobe, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wherever your home in Beckenham sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Beckenham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Beckenham Junction station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

There is no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we go through the options when we measure.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Bedroom storage in Beckenham

In the neighbourhood around Beckenham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Beckenham, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 25% of homes in the streets around Beckenham were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

For a flat near Beckenham Junction station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Christ Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • Room for a growing wardrobe

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St George, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
