Walk-in wardrobes in Totteridge
Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Oakleigh Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Totteridge?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.
Walk-in wardrobes in Totteridge: what you get
A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about turning a box room into a dressing room and shelves for shoes and bags.
The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Totteridge, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Why bespoke in Totteridge?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is finished before fitting day.
Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Totteridge
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- How you want to use the space
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice
Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Know what you will keep before planning
- Think about whether you want doors
- Make sure walls are dry before units go in
- Count your shoes before the design visit
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so hinges allow small adjustments later.
Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so a clear-out first gives a better design.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Totteridge
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 30% of the housing in the area around Totteridge, with about 30% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Totteridge. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in Totteridge is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live in a flat close to Oakleigh Park station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Brook Farm Open Space? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For families living near The Totteridge Academy, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
