TV and media units in Totteridge

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If you’re living with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and space for a soundbar and speakers, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Totteridge, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. TV and media units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

TV and media units in Totteridge: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Totteridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Totteridge, Historic England’s list includes The Priory (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Totteridge House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 30% of homes in the streets around Totteridge date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both.

For an older house near St Andrew's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your children go to The Totteridge Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Brook Farm Open Space, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oakleigh Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Totteridge?

Yes. Totteridge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home

Once your equipment is in, check that it is not running hot. Do not block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Give each its own space.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
