Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hendon

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If you are living with a use for a small spare room and proper shoe storage, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Hendon, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What affects the price in Hendon

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and how you dress.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Walk-in wardrobes in Hendon: local notes

About 45% of the homes in the streets around Hendon went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hendon. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Hendon is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Hendon School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Hendon, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Christ Church Hendon, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Hendon

I live in a flat in Hendon. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Hendon?

Yes. Hendon is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
