Wall beds in Chingford Mount: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Chingford Mount, with about 13% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Chingford Mount, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Church of St Edmund (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Chingford Mount, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Edmund's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a family home near Lime Academy Larkswood, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How we make wall beds for Chingford Mount

The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We will talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. If you are living with somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars typically has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Chingford Mount, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Advice

Questions from Chingford Mount

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chingford Mount?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Chingford Mount?

Yes. Chingford Mount is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

How much time does fitting need?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

When you need someone else

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Advice on your lease

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

The problems wall beds solve

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A home office that also sleeps guests

If you live near The Highams Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, with children kept well back while it moves.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
