  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • More floor space in a studio flat

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • Making good the walls after other work

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves or a desk around the bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

Older bedrooms usually have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Leytonstone date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Leytonstone

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Leytonstone were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Leytonstone, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Waltham Forest sets its own rules. If your street in Leytonstone is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Baptist, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Leytonstone, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Leyton Jubilee Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. Living in a block of flats near Leytonstone High Road station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wall beds are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What affects the price in Leytonstone

What you pay depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Leytonstone?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Leytonstone High Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
