Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Wall beds in Holloway Down: what you get

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are room for a desk and a guest bed and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Holloway Down date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Is it time for wall beds?

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

For an older house near Holy Trinity & St Augustine of Hippo, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

How to choose a carpenter in London

FAQs: wall beds in Holloway Down

My house in Holloway Down is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Maryland station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That comes down to the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood

Why bespoke in Holloway Down?

Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why us?
