Wall beds in Walthamstow Village: what you get

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. By day, the room is a living space; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a storage wall with a bed inside and a bed that fills a little-used room.

Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Walthamstow Village, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we look at it when we measure.

FAQs: wall beds in Walthamstow Village

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Walthamstow Village?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Walthamstow Central station?

Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
