Wall beds designed for your room

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. Typical reasons to get in touch are a living room with a bed that folds away and a real mattress for visitors; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Headstone, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Pricing wall beds in Headstone

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Why bespoke in Headstone?

Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Advice on your lease

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

FAQs: wall beds in Headstone

Do you make wall beds for homes in Headstone?

Yes. Headstone is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Harrow and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Do you cover homes near Headstone Lane station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That comes down to the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

Is a wall bed safe?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

We check that during the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Bedroom storage in Headstone

About 45% of the homes in the streets around Headstone went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Headstone is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in Headstone is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 0.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For families living near Pinner Park Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Pinner Park Farmhouse, under half a mile west of the centre of Headstone, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
