Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Wall beds in Stanmore: what you get

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a bed that fills a little-used room and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Stanmore, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it’s made from

Bed mechanism housing

A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so we build it with care. It’s fixed to a sound wall or floor.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely.

Advice

Bedrooms in Stanmore: local notes

About 43% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Stanmore went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Stanmore is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Stanmore (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 2.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Whitchurch Primary School & Nursery, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow & Wealdstone station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Stanmore?

Yes, Stanmore is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Harrow and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
