Wall beds in Harrow: what you get

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a playroom that can sleep visitors and a storage wall with a bed inside.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Harrow, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Is bespoke worth it?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, which suits some homes. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which can make a small room usable. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

What prompts wall beds in Harrow

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. People want a desk by day and a bed for visitors, and a wall bed makes that possible.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A spare room that is rarely slept in
  • More floor space in a studio flat

Close to Northwick Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Advice

Pricing wall beds in Harrow

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Is Harrow in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

I live near Harrow-on-the-Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish that suits older homes.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF front looks crisp, which suits the doors and side panels.

Bedrooms in Harrow: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Harrow were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The share of homes built before 1919 around Harrow, about 27%, is well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 10%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

For an older house near Church of St Peter, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Headstone Manor, about 1.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
