Fitted wardrobes across HA3: what to expect

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with damp or musty clothes against an external wall and too little room for clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

How our quotes work

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Fitted wardrobes across HA3: local notes

Across HA3, including Harrow, Stanmore and Hatch End, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

The biggest shares of homes in HA3 were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 46% of homes in HA3 date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 46% of households in HA3, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in HA3 ahead of fitting day.

Kenton: If you live near Preston Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary and Parish Hall, under half a mile west of the centre of Kenton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

When you need someone else

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. The colour is agreed with you, and touch-ups are simple.

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How do I get started?

Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
