About our fitted cupboards in Headstone

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. If your home has storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Headstone, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted cupboards in Headstone: local notes

In the streets around Headstone, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Headstone, Historic England’s list includes Pinner Park Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Letchford House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Harrow sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Headstone Manor, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For families living near Pinner Park Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Living in a block of flats near Headstone Lane station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Headstone

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Headstone?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Fitted cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Advice

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Moving gas or electricity meters
  • Building work or structural changes
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Ventilated doors

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking near your home

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
