Window seats for your home in Hornchurch Marshes
About our window seats in Hornchurch Marshes
Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the whole wall looks considered. It is worth talking through during the design visit in Hornchurch Marshes. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are no space for toys and games and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay.
Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Hornchurch Marshes date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Seats take weight every day, so they need to be strong. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. It suits the drawers below too.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. It suits a seat that sees daily use.
Window seats in Hornchurch Marshes: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hornchurch Marshes, with about 34% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Newer homes are more common around Hornchurch Marshes than across Havering: about 43% date from 2000 onwards, against about 13%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Havering included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Hornchurch Marshes. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Helen and St Giles, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. The wider area includes historic houses such as Rainham Hall, about 1.1 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For families living near Brook Sixth Form and Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

What affects the price in Hornchurch Marshes
What you pay depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking near your home
- The number of doors and drawers
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you get in touch
When you contact us, these help most:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Ask for a quote

Common questions about window seats
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hornchurch Marshes?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make window seats for homes in Hornchurch Marshes?
Yes, Hornchurch Marshes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.
