Window Seats in Heath Park

Window seats in Heath Park: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay

Storage in Heath Park homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Heath Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Heath Park. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Havering has its own. Where a street in Heath Park is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Saint Alban Church of England, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 0.8 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Heath Park is part of the London Borough of Havering, about 1 mile west of Romford. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Heath Park is part of that. We list Heath Park among 22 places we cover in Havering.

Design visits and fitting in RM11, RM1 and RM2 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Moss Lane, Park Lane and Manor Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for window seats. We also cover Ardleigh Green (1 mile north-east), Hornchurch (1 mile south-east), Emerson Park (1 mile east), Gidea Park (1 mile north) and Gallows Corner (1 mile north). We also make window seats in nearby places such as Elm Park (2 miles south), Collier Row (2 miles north-west), Rainham (4 miles south), Upminster (2 miles south-east), South Hornchurch (3 miles south) and Upminster Bridge (2 miles south-east). As one of the bigger places in Havering, Heath Park is covered for window seats and everything else we make.

About our window seats in Heath Park

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Heath Park is the same. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Heath Park, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

What affects the price in Heath Park

Several things affect the price:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is it time for window seats?

The radiator beneath a window can make it tricky to put furniture there. A seat with a grille in the front keeps the radiator working and the window usable. It is a neat answer to a common problem.

Window seats can help with:

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

For a family home near Squirrels Heath Infant School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the window, including any radiator under it.
  2. We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we will be working in

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Common questions about window seats

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Heath Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as we can while we work.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Note whether your window has working shutters
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it

Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is normally all it needs. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Wipe away condensation from the window before it runs onto the seat. Keep the window ventilated in cold weather. Dry any water on the paint promptly.
