South Hornchurch Window Seats

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make window seats for homes in South Hornchurch, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Needing more storage in the room
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room

Need window seats in South Hornchurch?

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Window seats in South Hornchurch: what you get

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in South Hornchurch, we’ll check the radiator and plan around it. Most enquiries start with a bay with no furniture that fits and a nursery or bedroom short of storage; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Homes from the 1950s and 1960s normally have plain, regular rooms, so fitted storage can be crisp and simple to match. Many homes around South Hornchurch date from the post-war decades. We still measure everything, as no room is perfectly square.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.

Window seats in South Hornchurch: local notes

In the area around South Hornchurch, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 47%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. About 28% of homes in the area around South Hornchurch were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so window seats are designed with fixings to suit. About 28% of homes around South Hornchurch were built since 2000, well above the figure for Havering as a whole, about 13%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

Close to Beam Valley Country Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to St John's Parish Church, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. The wider area includes historic houses like Rainham Hall, about 0.9 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Hornchurch?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Rainham (Essex) station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know in advance helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, and bay windows rarely offer either. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, while fitted furniture fills the space. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
