Your questions about window seats in Dagenham Green

Is Dagenham Green in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Dagenham Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Dagenham Dock station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What materials do you use for window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

How we make window seats for Dagenham Green

Sash windows are a feature of many older London homes. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. If the window has shutters, the seat is planned so they can still open fully. These details are measured when we visit your home in Dagenham Green. If your home has a bay window that’s hard to furnish and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room, that’s what window seats are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Dagenham Green, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Why people ask for window seats in Dagenham Green

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. A bay can be an tricky space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • No space for toys and games
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A bay window that is hard to furnish

If your children go to Marsh Green Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Dagenham Green homes and window seats

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around Dagenham Green, with about 15% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Barking and Dagenham is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Dagenham Green. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit. About 48% of households in the streets around Dagenham Green live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a bay or sash windows, good places for a seat with storage.

If you live in a period home close to St Martin's Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. The wider area includes historic houses such as Rainham Hall, about 1.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves awkward gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Advice

When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Lift-up lids or drawers

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Let us know about the radiator before we visit
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Make room so the whole bay can be measured

When we have finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
