How we make fitted wardrobes for RM13

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are not enough hanging space and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

What goes into your quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why work with us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Built around your room
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Saturdays by arrangement

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Near you in Rainham

Our area takes in the homes around The Chafford School, Harris Academy Rainham and Rainham Village Primary School. Other local landmarks include The Phoenix pub (a few minutes’ walk west), Wildspace Conservation Park (1 mile south) and Church of St Helen and St Giles (a few minutes’ walk west). There is a railway station in Rainham itself: Rainham (Essex) station. Open spaces near Rainham include Ingrebourne Marshes.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across RM13

Across RM13, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 49% of the housing in the RM13 postcode district, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 49% of homes in the RM13 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 38% of households in the RM13 postcode district live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Rainham: Rainham Hall, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Church of St Helen and St Giles, less than half a mile west of the centre of Rainham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in RM13

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What to send when you contact us

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.

Questions from RM13

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
