When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Window seats for homes in Dagenham Dock
Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Dagenham Dock, the design visit is where the details are settled. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a radiator that makes the space hard to use and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay.
Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Dagenham Dock, door styles are talked through at the design visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Do you make window seats for homes in Dagenham Dock?
Yes, we work across Barking and Dagenham, Dagenham Dock included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
How long will the window seat fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.
Why bespoke in Dagenham Dock?
Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Let us know about parking near your home
Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is normally all it needs. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.
Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Dry any water on the paint promptly.
