Belmont Alcove Units

  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house

About our alcove units in Belmont

Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting. We agree these details at the measuring visit, before anything is made. Typical reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and everyday clutter left on show, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Belmont, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for alcove units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, checking how far the walls are out of square.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Alcove units in Belmont: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Belmont were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and before 1919 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Belmont, Historic England’s list includes Kenton Lane Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Church of St Anselm (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For a flat near Harrow & Wealdstone station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Headstone Manor, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Pricing alcove units in Belmont

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The number of doors and drawers

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is it time for alcove units?

Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. New units are a chance to rethink how the space works.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • A place for a small desk
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

For an older house near Church of St Anselm, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Your questions about alcove units in Belmont

Do you make alcove units for homes in Belmont?

Yes, we work across Harrow, Belmont included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Belmont?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We’ll help you choose during the design visit.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are made in our workshop first.
