How we make fitted wardrobes for HA7
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere proper to go and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
What goes into your quote
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Fitted wardrobes across HA7: local notes
Across HA7, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 58% of the housing in the HA7 postcode district, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. More than half of the homes in HA7 (about 58%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 55% of households in HA7, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
Homes across HA7 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.
Stanmore: For a flat near Harrow & Wealdstone station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Church of St John, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Is bespoke worth it?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Tall doors need a stable material. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, for plain or panelled doors alike.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing means trimming edges on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Honest limits
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Structural changes to the room
Could you do it yourself?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
We plan it with you at the measuring visit, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
