Alcove units in Roxeth, Harrow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on alcove units in Roxeth starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • A place for a small desk

About our alcove units in Roxeth

We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen part by part. MDF suits doors and panels because it paints so evenly, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. You can have a spray-painted finish from the workshop or a hand-painted one done on site, in a colour agreed with you. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about cupboards in keeping with an older house and old alcove cupboards that have seen better days.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Roxeth, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. Alcove units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Common questions about alcove units

I live near Sudbury Hill Harrow station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the measuring visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them, which closes the gaps you’d see with standard furniture.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even, while hand painting suits a softer, traditional look and is simple to touch up. We will help you choose during the design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shelves in some flat-pack furniture are thin and can bow under books. We size our shelves for their span and what they’ll carry, with birch plywood where it’s needed. That said, if you’re renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Shelves

Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing means trimming the edges on site so they follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

How fitting works for alcove units

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

If you live on or close to a main road in Roxeth, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For an older house near Christ Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 1.9 miles south-west.
