Belmont Under-Stairs Storage

Pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs, designed for your room in Belmont. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

Need under-stairs storage in Belmont?

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Belmont

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Close to Canons Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • A written quote that sets out the job

About our under-stairs storage in Belmont

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. We’ll look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Belmont. If your home has nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and cleaning things with no proper home, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Belmont, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where a smooth, even finish matters most.

Plinths and scribe strips

Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Belmont

In the neighbourhood around Belmont, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and before 1919 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Belmont is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Harrow included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Belmont. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Kenton Lane Farmhouse, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Anselm, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Belmont

I live near Harrow & Wealdstone station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Belmont affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
