How we make alcove units for Harrow Weald

A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, while the shelves hold books and the things you want on show. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. We set the heights to suit the room and what you will store. Most enquiries start with a desk that tucks into an alcove and shelving for books and records, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Harrow Weald, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for alcove units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Common questions about alcove units

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Headstone Lane station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What affects the price of alcove units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Harrow Weald?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy finish.

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things, from paperbacks to tall art books. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.

Pricing alcove units in Harrow Weald

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The internal fittings
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Where you live, with the postcode

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
  2. We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
  3. We send a written quote for the units, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. The units are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Related advice

Do you need alcove units in Harrow Weald?

Moving into a period house often prompts it. New owners want storage that suits the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It is also a good moment, before the room fills up.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

For an older house near St Michael & All Angels, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Harrow Weald homes and alcove units

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Harrow Weald, with about 19% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. Part of Harrow Weald is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Harrow are set locally. If your road in Harrow Weald falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. We size our shelves for their span and what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength matters. That said, if you’re renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
