Alcove units for homes in Brent Cross

Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, while the shelves hold books and the things you want on show. The cupboard top gives you a ledge for a lamp, a speaker or a plant. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about toys and paperwork with no proper home and standard units leaving gaps at the sides.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Brent Cross, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for alcove units

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you’ve picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

How to get a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Brent Cross

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Brent Cross?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make alcove units for a home in Brent Cross?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Brent Cross included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. If you want sockets moved or added, your electrician should do that before we fit, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We can plan cut-outs and cable routes in the units around them.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What we don’t do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Scribed side panels
  • Adjustable shelves

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

In an alcove unit, MDF gives smooth doors and tidy edges. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a chimney breast.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it suits a period room.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about what you will store before we meet
  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Mention parking and access when we visit

Make a note of the paint colour used. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch up.

Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose and adjust a door before a small rub becomes a mark.
