Alcove units in Whetstone
Living-room carpentry in Whetstone: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Whetstone were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Whetstone. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barnet has its own. If your road in Whetstone falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.
For a family home near Queenswell Infant & Nursery School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. For a flat near Oakleigh Park station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Swan Lane Open Space, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Alcove units for homes in Whetstone
We work across London, including Whetstone. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote; the units are then made in our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room to work in an alcove and storage that suits a period room.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Whetstone, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

When you need someone else
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
What it is made from
- Hand-painted finish
- Adjustable shelves
- Scribed side panels
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Panelled or flat doors
- Spray-painted finish
Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
- We send a written quote for the units, so you can look it over in your own time.
- Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is also good for drawer boxes. It’s painted to match the rest of the unit, or the edge is left as a detail.
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.

Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Questions from Whetstone
Do you cover homes near Oakleigh Park station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Whetstone?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Whetstone is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
It’s up to you. Full-height units give the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We talk through the options at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent is kept clear in the design. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from alcove units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
- Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
- Think about what you’ll store before we meet
To clean painted units, a soft cloth that’s barely damp is enough. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, which can dull or mark the paint. Dry the surface afterwards.
Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Overloaded shelves are the main cause of sagging.
