Common questions about fitted home offices
Do you cover homes near Brent Cross West station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brent Cross?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
What materials do you use for home offices?
Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?
That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. We’ll look at the options at the measuring visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
How we make fitted home offices for Brent Cross
A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. In Brent Cross, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are shelving that bows under the load and paperwork and files with nowhere to go.
A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Much of the housing around Brent Cross is interwar, semi-detached or detached. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Why bespoke in Brent Cross?
Ready-made office furniture comes in set sizes for straight walls. In an tricky space, standard pieces leave gaps. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Is it time for fitted home offices?
A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It makes the most of a room that is only sometimes used for guests.
Here’s what fitted home offices can help with:
- An alcove or landing that could take a desk
- No way to put work away
- A desk in the wrong light
- A guest room that’s needed for work
For an older house near Christ Church Hendon, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
What to check before you book
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Real projects you can actually look at
Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Check whether you’ll need new sockets
- Note how many files and books you need to store
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything is not right with the furniture, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll talk it through.
Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Mop up spills quickly. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.
