TV and media units in Brent Cross

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are space for a soundbar and speakers and boxes and consoles on the floor.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Brent Cross, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Living-room storage in Brent Cross

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Brent Cross were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and before 1919 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Brent Cross include Penfold House (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Hendon Central Underground Station (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Barnet included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Brent Cross, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath House, about 1.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Brent Cross West station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Clarefield Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Let us know about access early
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.

Label cables when you set things up.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Brent Cross?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Brent Cross West station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. We plan the cable routes into the design. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

There’s no grain to show through the paint for a smooth finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

How fitting works for TV and media units

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
