Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring

Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.

Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

How we make alcove units for Brent Park

Period alcoves are rarely square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, sometimes all in one recess. Each unit is built in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If you’re living with alcoves that aren’t square and everyday clutter left on show, alcove units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Brent Park, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp
  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

For alcove shelves that carry books, birch plywood helps keep them straight over a wider alcove. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.

The problems alcove units solve

Moving into a period house often prompts it. New owners want storage that suits the house, and the alcoves are the natural place for it. It is also a good moment, before the room fills up.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
  • Everyday clutter left on show

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Brent Park homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Brent Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and since 2000 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Brent Park is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Around a third of the homes in the area around Brent Park (about 34%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both.

For a flat near Stonebridge Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You tell us which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. Once you’re happy, the units are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

Advice

Common questions about alcove units

My home in Brent Park is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Alcove units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make alcove units for homes in Brent Park?

Yes. Brent Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other. We will plan the desk around how you work.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

That’s your choice. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
