Questions from Brent Park
Does a conservation area in or near Brent Park affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Stonebridge Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Built-in bookshelves in Brent Park: what you get
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you are living with books piled on the floor and a home library or study, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Brent Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Why us?
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Made for your room, not a standard size

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How big the furniture is
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- The type of home and how the room is reached
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Brent Park
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 34% of the housing in the streets around Brent Park, with about 27% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Brent Park is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Brent Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Living in a block of flats near Stonebridge Park station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Mitchell Brook Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Brent Park
Working from home is another reason. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Shelving that frames a window
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Books with nowhere left to go
Close to St. Raphael's Edible Garden? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
When you need someone else
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
