How we make alcove units for Kilburn
In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. We ask what you want to store before we plan the inside, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about somewhere to keep books and records and worn or badly fitted alcove units.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Kilburn, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What alcove units can’t fix
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Any structural work on the chimney breast
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
FAQs: alcove units in Kilburn
I live near Queens Park (London) station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Is Kilburn in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Kilburn is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That’s your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
Do you move sockets for alcove units?
Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It is best done before the units go in so the sockets line up with the design. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.
How tall should alcove units be?
That is your choice. Full-height units give the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We will go through what suits your room when we visit.
Living-room storage in Kilburn
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Kilburn were built before 1919 (about 59%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Kilburn, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 50% of households in the streets around Kilburn, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Anne's and St Andrew's, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Augustine, about 0.6 miles south-east of the centre of Kilburn, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Why bespoke in Kilburn?
Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re typically cheaper. The catch is the fit: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke unit is built to the alcove and scribed to follow the wall. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

What prompts alcove units in Kilburn
Sometimes it’s the clutter of a busy living room. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and closed cupboards hide them away. The shelves above can then stay tidy.
We are often asked to help with:
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
For a family home near Salusbury Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone

- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
- We visit to measure the alcoves and discuss the design, including the paint finish.
- The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you’ve picked.
- We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
- Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
