Ask about alcove units in Church End

Why people ask for alcove units in Church End

For some, it is about books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Alcoves that aren’t square

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

About our alcove units in Church End

We work across London, including Church End. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. People normally come to us about units that sit well with original features and clutter with nowhere to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Church End, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed with you before we start.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice where an alcove sits against an external wall.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the units, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How to get a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Church End

Can you make alcove units for a home in Church End?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Church End is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

I live in a flat in Church End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Alcove units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. The height is settled at the design visit.

Living-room storage in Church End

About 46% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Church End went up before 1919, and about 27% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Church End. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Brent included. Vans bringing furniture to Church End fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Harlesden station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Church of St Mary, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
