What affects the cost of TV and media units
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How square the room is
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
About our TV and media units in Brent Park
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a TV that looks out of place in the room and space for a soundbar and speakers.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Brent Park, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Brent Park homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Brent Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Brent Park is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Brent Park (about 27%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so TV and media units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
For a flat near Stonebridge Park station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Mitchell Brook Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Is bespoke worth it?
Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
FAQs: TV and media units in Brent Park
I live near Stonebridge Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?
That is the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
