Alcove units in Brondesbury
How we make alcove units for Brondesbury
Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. Closed cupboards hide everyday clutter, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. If your home has standard units leaving gaps at the sides and units that sit well with original features, that is what alcove units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Brondesbury, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives alcove units an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- The units are built in our workshop.
- We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote

Advice
Questions from Brondesbury
Is parking a problem for fitting in Brondesbury?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit alcove units to the uneven walls of an older house in Brondesbury?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other if you want the two sides to differ. The desk is planned around the way you work.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Brondesbury?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, Brondesbury included.
Do you move sockets for alcove units?
Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. Ideally it’s done before fitting, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.
How do I get started?
It is easiest to use our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there’s less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Treat the units gently while the paint cures fully.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it a good choice for shelves and carcasses. Its layered edge can be painted or left to show.
Practical tips
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
- Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
In fairness, standalone furniture comes with you when you move. Built-in units become part of the room and are left behind when you go. Which suits you depends on your plans. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Spray painting or hand painting
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Brondesbury homes and alcove units
In the area around Brondesbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Brondesbury is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Brondesbury is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
For families living near North West London Jewish Day School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Near listed buildings like Black Lion Public House, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Brondesbury, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
