Our fitted wardrobes across NW6
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves in the bedroom and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
How our quotes work
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why work with us
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
Arranging a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
What’s near Kilburn
The streets we cover here include those near Maida Vale School, Marylebone Boys' School and St Anne's and St Andrew's, among other places. Other local landmarks include Queen’s Park (a few minutes’ walk west), Salusbury Primary School (within half a mile west) and The Brondesbury Arms (under half a mile south-east). There is a railway station in Kilburn itself: Queens Park (London) station. Nearby you will also find Paddington General Hospital (1 mile south) and Brent Museum and Archives (1.3 miles north-west). For a walk, there’s Greville Place nature reserve.
Homes across NW6 and their bedrooms
If your bedroom in NW6 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
About 59% of the homes in NW6 went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 59% of homes in the NW6 postcode district were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 34% of households in NW6 live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.
Kilburn: For a flat near Queens Park (London) station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Pricing fitted wardrobes in NW6
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Parking near your home
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- How big the furniture is
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
To get a quote for fitted wardrobes in NW6, fill in our short enquiry form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Empty the area where we will be working
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Questions from NW6
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It turns tricky space into storage.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
It is worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Which boards do you build with?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
