An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. Desk height and depth are agreed with you. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about space for a growing book collection and a place for a small desk.

Around Willesden, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for alcove units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.

What prompts alcove units in Willesden

For some, it is about books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with each shelf set to suit it.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

FAQs: alcove units in Willesden

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kensal Rise station?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Willesden?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens on fitting day

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Alcove units for homes in Willesden

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Willesden were built before 1919 (about 60%) and since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Willesden is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Brent sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Fenton House, about 2.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. If you live near Roundwood Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from alcove units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about what you will store before we meet
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit

Once the cupboards are filled and in daily use, a door may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.

Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose and adjust a door before a small rub becomes a mark.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for drawer boxes too because it stands up to daily use. It’s painted to match the rest of the unit, or the edge is left as a detail.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gets an even coat into corners and onto edges and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
