Brook Green Alcove Units
Planning alcove units for a home in Brook Green? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.
- Furniture that does not fit the alcove
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
- A place for a small desk
Alcove units designed for your room
What we don’t do
Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Any structural work on the chimney breast
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Panelled or flat doors
- Spray-painted finish
- Adjustable shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Scribed side panels
- Birch plywood
Alcove units in Brook Green
Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting so the units feel part of the room. We agree these details at the measuring visit, before anything is made. If your home has somewhere to keep books and records and old alcove cupboards that have seen better days, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and around Brook Green, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height alcove units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
- A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know about parking near your home
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Brook Green homes and alcove units
In the streets around Brook Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 70%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Brook Green, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Brook Green is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
For a family home near Larmenier & Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John the Baptist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to The Parish Church of Saint Mary, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Alcoves vary in depth, and the chimney breast decides how far a unit can come out. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about alcove units
Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Brook Green?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
My home in Brook Green is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is the furniture made to order?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Brook Green?
Yes. Brook Green is part of the area we cover, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
How do I get started?
Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?
Electrical work isn’t something we do. If you want sockets moved or added, your electrician should do that before we fit, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.
What affects the cost of alcove units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- The internal fittings
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
- The width and height of the space
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
