TV and media units in Brook Green

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. Any chimney vent is kept clear. If you are living with leads that show from every angle and boxes with no ventilation, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. That matters around Brook Green, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Your postcode and the borough

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

What prompts TV and media units in Brook Green

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • A cabinet that traps heat

If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Brook Green?

Yes, Brook Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Brook Green?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it to avoid marks.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.
