Brook Green Wall Beds
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Brook Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

How we make wall beds for Brook Green
Our wall beds are made for homes in Brook Green and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a flexible room for a growing family and hiding the bed when it’s not in use.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Brook Green, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

The problems wall beds solve
A flexible room is useful as needs change. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests when it’s needed.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- More floor space in a studio flat
- Hiding the bed when it is not in use
- A hobby room with a bed for guests
- A storage wall with a bed inside
Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Baptist, about 0.5 miles north-east of the centre of Brook Green, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Choosing a carpenter
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
How it’s made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism and fix it as the maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.
FAQs: wall beds in Brook Green
My house in Brook Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Brook Green?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?
Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Brook Green
About 70% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Brook Green went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Brook Green is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 33% of households in the area around Brook Green, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
For an older house near The Parish Church of Saint Mary, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a family home near Larmenier & Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Check there is room for the bed to fold down
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.
Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it at the measuring visit too.
When you need someone else
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- Plastering or decorating the room
- Electrical work for reading lights
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.
