Fitted wardrobes in W14: how it works

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bedroom that never feels tidy and empty alcoves in the bedroom.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Quotes in W14

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across W14

If your bedroom in W14 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

The biggest shares of homes in W14 were built before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 68% of homes in W14 were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in W14, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Earl's Court: Near listed buildings like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, under half a mile west of the centre of Earl's Court, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Garden Lodge, about 0.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.

Hanging rails

Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

Questions from W14

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do you cover W14?

Yes. We cover W14 and the rest of Kensington and Chelsea, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

How do I get started?

The first step is to use our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
