Fitted wardrobes in W6: how it works

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across W6

In W6, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

In the W6 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 11%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than half of the homes in W6 (about 65%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 27% of households in the W6 postcode district, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.

Hammersmith: For families living near Corona Theatre School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

How we price fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. Opening a window now and then helps.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Too little room for clothes
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside. Inside drawers keep the front simple.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Is bespoke worth it?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in W6

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in W6?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, W6 included.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.
