How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
- A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing, ready for you to check.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that is what you chose.
- The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Alcove units in Cyprus: what you get
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. We plan the desk height and depth with you. If you are living with tired cupboards in the alcoves and walls too uneven for standard furniture, alcove units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Cyprus date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. Alcove units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with routes for cables designed in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Alcove units for homes in Cyprus
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 44% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Cyprus, with about 42% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Cyprus, Historic England’s list includes Gallions Hotel (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Central Buffet at Custom House (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Cyprus is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 2.3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For an older house near St Michael and All Angels Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Cyprus is in the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles north-west of Plaistow. We cover Cyprus as part of our work across Newham, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Across Newham, we cover Cyprus, along with the rest of the borough.
We work across E6 and E16. Our area takes in homes on streets like Strait Road, Harper Road and Trader Road, along with the roads around them, for alcove units and any of our other fitted furniture. Other places close to Cyprus include Beckton (1 mile north-east), North Woolwich (1 mile south), Royal Docks (1 mile west), East Ham (1 mile north) and Custom House (1 mile west). Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Plaistow (2 miles north-west), Stratford (4 miles north-west), Canning Town (2 miles west), Forest Gate (3 miles north-west), Upton Park (2 miles north-west) and Greengate (2 miles north-west).

FAQs: alcove units in Cyprus
Can you make alcove units for a home in Cyprus?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Cyprus is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near Woolwich station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Cyprus?
Simply message us from the contact page. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
We design around any vent so it stays open. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there’s damp on the breast already, it’s best sorted before fitting.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the design visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy finish.
Moisture-resistant MDF
For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides. Its moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice beside a chimney breast.
What prompts alcove units in Cyprus
Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. New units are a chance to rethink how the space works, from the doors to what goes inside.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Cupboards in keeping with an older house
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
Close to Beckton District Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
What to check before you book
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How parking will work on your street
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
When you need someone else
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.
