How we make under-stairs storage for Cyprus

In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Cyprus, it can make the front door feel far calmer. If you’re living with an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and stairs open to a room, with clutter on show, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Cyprus built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Cyprus

I live near Woolwich station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Cyprus is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How long does the fitting take?

It depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Pull-out drawers

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Starting with a design visit

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Fitted storage in Cyprus

In the neighbourhood around Cyprus, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 42%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cyprus include Gallions Hotel (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Central Buffet at Custom House (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Fewer homes around Cyprus date from before 1919 than across Newham: about 4%, against about 37%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

Close to Beckton District Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 2.3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For families living near Winsor Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Cyprus is within the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles north-west of Plaistow. Design visits and fitting in Cyprus can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Newham, large and small.

Design visits and fitting in E6 and E16 work the same way as everywhere else we cover.
