Our fitted wardrobes across E16

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Most enquiries start with standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

What goes into your quote

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Around Canning Town

Our area takes in the homes around The Royal Docks Community School, Keir Hardie Park and The Tidal Basin Tavern and the streets around them. Also close by are St Cedd's Church (close by, under half a mile north), Royal Docks Academy (0.5 miles south-east) and Rosetta Primary School (under half a mile north-east). Canning Town has its own railway station: Custom House station. A little further out are Albert Dock Seamen's Hospital (0.5 miles east) and West Ham United Football Club Museum (1.4 miles north-east).

Bedroom storage across E16

Homes across E16, Plaistow, Plumstead and Canning Town included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

About 35% of the homes in E16 went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Around a third of the homes in E16 (about 35%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 54% of households in the E16 postcode district, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, E16 included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Canning Town: Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a period home close to St Cedd's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

What affects the price in E16

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

For a quote for fitted wardrobes in E16, message us from the contact page. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

An awkward room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Not enough hanging space
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in E16

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do you work in E16?

Yes. We cover E16 and the rest of Newham, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

What materials do you use?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.
