Elmers End Alcove Units

In Elmers End, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. Your alcove unit is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. The colour is agreed with you, and it’s easy to refresh in years to come.

Alcove units for homes in Elmers End

We work across London, including Elmers End. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you’re happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. Typical reasons to get in touch are alcoves that are wasted space and toys and paperwork with no proper home; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Elmers End, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it is a layout worth planning for. Alcove units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Elmers End homes and alcove units

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Elmers End, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 34% of homes in the streets around Elmers End date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and alcove units are planned around both. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Elmers End, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Close to Winsford Gardens? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For an older house near St James's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Is it time for alcove units?

A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. Units on both sides frame the chimney breast and balance the room.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Room to work in an alcove

Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Questions from Elmers End

Is Elmers End in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Elmers End included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

I live near Elmers End station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish. We will help you choose at the design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?

It’s up to you. Full-height units give the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We will go through what suits your room when we visit.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and discuss the design, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, so you can look it over in your own time.
  4. The units are made in our workshop.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
