Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.

About our TV and media units in Elmers End

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Elmers End, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. People typically come to us about space for a soundbar and speakers and boxes with no ventilation; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around Elmers End, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. TV and media units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A large TV wall needs flat, stable panels. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish.

What TV and media units can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What happens on fitting day

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Elmers End

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Elmers End?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Elmers End included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Elmers End station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space.
