Alcove units for homes in Fulwell
A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help keep damp out of the breast. Units are planned so any vent stays clear. Any damp in the alcoves should be dealt with by the right trade before the units go in. Most enquiries start with standard units leaving gaps at the sides and cupboards in keeping with an older house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Fulwell, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives alcove units a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Built-in living-room furniture in Fulwell
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Fulwell were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Fulwell. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Fulwell, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If you live near Carlisle Park, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For families living near Stanley Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For an older house near St Michael's, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. We size our shelves for their span and what they’ll carry. That said, if you’re renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Your questions about alcove units in Fulwell
Does a conservation area in or near Fulwell affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
I live near Fulwell station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How long are you in the house for the fitting?
The time on site depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The units are made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.
Do both alcove units have to match?
It is entirely your choice. The two alcoves are often slightly different sizes, so each unit is made for its own recess. They can match in style while doing different jobs.
Which finishes are there for alcove units?
There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Each alcove is measured at the design visit, then the units are made in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them, so there are no awkward gaps.
Where other trades come in
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Practical tips
People planning alcove units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
- Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks to stop rings and water marks on the paint. Dry any spills quickly.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square, then go through the design with you.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a quote in writing.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
