TV and media units for homes in Fulwell

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above. Any chimney vent is kept clear. If you’re living with games, controllers and remotes everywhere and cables trailing across the wall, that is what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Fulwell is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To get a quote, use our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

How fitting works for TV and media units

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

Is it time for TV and media units?

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room

Close to Carlisle Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

FAQs: TV and media units in Fulwell

Is Fulwell in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Fulwell is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Fulwell station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with access panels for later changes. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are, and your electrician can move them if needed.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

We don’t do electrical work. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Living-room storage in Fulwell

About 34% of the homes in the area around Fulwell went up before 1919, and about 30% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The Royal Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Fulwell. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Richmond upon Thames has its own. Where a street in Fulwell is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Living in a block of flats near Fulwell station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Chapel in the Wood, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.

Don’t let clutter build up against the unit’s vents as things change.
