Fitted wardrobes for homes in Fulwell

In the area around Fulwell, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Fulwell is within about a quarter of a mile of the Royal Road Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Richmond upon Thames sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Fulwell, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Fulwell station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Fitted wardrobes in Fulwell: what you get

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. If your home has damp or musty clothes against an external wall and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Fulwell, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live near Fulwell station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Does a conservation area in or near Fulwell affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you during the design visit, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Fulwell

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 0.6 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
