Alcove units for homes in Whitton
In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that sit as part of the room. Where a room in Whitton has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one, starting with a design visit to measure. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are clutter with nowhere to go and bowed walls and sloping floors.
A good part of the housing around Whitton is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where alcove units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, talk through the design and check the route from the street to the room. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about alcove units in Whitton
I live near Whitton station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Whitton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Will alcove units block the chimney vent?
Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What paint finish can I have on alcove units?
We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both at the measuring visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, flush with the chimney breast or set back from it. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Built-in living-room furniture in Whitton
About 56% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Whitton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Whitton, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 44% of households in the streets around Whitton live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
For an older house near All Saints Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Whitton station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Alcoves that are not square
- Room to work in an alcove
Richmond House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Materials and finishes
Shelves
Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it gives a softer, traditional look.
